Dear Tangueros,
As we all know, Official USA Tango Championship is around the corner. Needless to say, it’s very important to get as much experience in performing as possible before the big day. For the past two years I offered a mock-competition to the registered competitors of the Official Championship for a chance to gain experience; many supported the idea and it ended up being a very good experience for everyone involved –dancers, organizers and spectators. This year, I am officially starting the Southern California Competition. Anyone from Southern California who is interested in competing is welcome!! There are absolutely no restrictions.
The competition consists of 1 category:
TANGO SALON
The competitors will be dancing in groups of 4 couples. Each group will be dancing 3 songs for the qualifying round & 3 songs for the final round.
RULES
About the Position of Tango Dance:
Once a couple forms a dance frame, the partners shall not separate as long as the music is playing. This means that they cannot break the embrace, which is considered as the Tango dance position.
For the position to be considered correct, partners must constantly hold each other by means of the embrace. It is understood that, in certain figures, this may be flexible; but not throughout the entire piece of music.
All movements shall be performed within the space allowed by the couple’s embrace.
The Judges will give special relevance to the couple’s musicality and connection, technique, music interpretation and elegant walking style.
Within these guidelines, participants may perform any figure commonly used, including barridas (sweeps), sacadas (close to the floor), enrosques (twists), etc.
Ganchos (hooks), saltos (jumps), trepadas (climbs) and any other typically stage tango possibilities where both feet lose contact with the floor are completely excluded.
Couples, as in a real dance hall, must constantly move counterclockwise and avoid remaining in the same place for too long to avoid the floor circulation.
None of the members of the couple may lift his/her legs beyond the line of the knees. Some foot embellishments are allowed within this limit.
Elegant social dance wear for women and traditional suits for men are advised although costumes will not be considered as a specific evaluation point in this category.
The competition will have preliminary & final rounds only. The competition will take place on March 6th at MQ
